Possums
are marsupials that are originally from Australia but they
were introduced to other parts of the world by early European
settlers. Most possums are half the size of a regular house
cat and have long tails and small ears. If they are threatened
they will often look dead and they are common in residential
and suburban areas and they are most active in the late
night. They eat anything including garbage, pet food and
fruits and vegetables.
You should secure garbage cans to keep them away from your
home. Possums tend to be solitary creatures and they are
one of the few creatures that have adapted to life with
the European settlers in Australia. Possums use urban areas
as a good space for dens. Possums make a lot of noise in
ceiling space above human living spaces. People often mistake
them for rats. They also cause household damage when traumatised.
They can fall down a chimney or into a house and cause big
mess.
